A groomer's guide to handling anxious dogs

The GroomWork Team·May 4, 2026·8 min read

Anxious dogs aren't difficult dogs — they're scared ones. A calm, consistent approach keeps them (and you) safe, and good records make every future visit smoother.

Read the dog before you touch it

Give a nervous dog a moment to arrive. Slow movements, a quiet voice, and letting them sniff your hand set the tone. Rushing the first sixty seconds costs you the whole appointment.

Watch for the early signals — whale eye, lip licking, a tucked tail — and adjust your pace before stress becomes a snap.

Have a clear, humane handling policy

Decide in advance how you handle high-stress moments: when you use a muzzle, when you pause, and when you stop and reschedule. A written policy protects the pet, the owner's trust and your hands.

Communicate it kindly to owners up front. Most are relieved you take their dog's comfort seriously and have a plan.

Record everything, every time

The single biggest safety upgrade is memory. Note what triggered stress, what calmed the dog, which tools you used, and what to try next time — right on the pet's profile.

With behaviour notes on the record, the next groom starts with hard-won context instead of a cold start. Over a few visits, that turns a fraught dog into a manageable regular.

Know when to say not today

Sometimes the kindest, most professional call is to stop. A partial groom and an honest conversation beats a bad experience that makes the next visit worse.

Suggest a desensitisation plan — short, positive visits that build trust — and log the plan so everyone follows it consistently.
