The pricing playbook for independent groomers

The GroomWork Team·Jun 12, 2026·9 min read

Most groomers undercharge — not because their work isn't worth it, but because pricing feels awkward. Here's a simple, defensible framework that pays you fairly and reads clearly to clients.

Price the work, not the guilt

Your price should reflect three things: the time a groom takes, the skill it demands, and the condition of the coat on the day. When your pricing maps to those, it stops feeling personal and starts feeling professional.

Clients rarely object to a fair, explained price. They object to surprises. The goal is a structure you can state plainly in one breath.

Start with a size-and-breed base

Set a base price band for each size class — toy, small, medium, large, giant — and layer breed on top, because coat type drives time as much as weight does. A doodle and a lab may weigh the same and take wildly different effort.

GroomWork can store a base duration and price per service and size, so the right figure is suggested automatically when you pick the pet — no mental maths mid-booking.

Add condition-based modifiers

Matting, heavy shedding, and behavioural difficulty all add real time. Publish a small, transparent add-on list — for example a de-matting fee charged in 15-minute increments — so the extra is expected, not sprung.

Explain the 'why' once, on your booking page: humane de-matting takes time and protects the pet's skin. Framed that way, clients understand it's care, not a cash grab.

Review your rates on a schedule

Pick a date each year to revisit pricing against your costs. Small, regular increases are far easier for clients to absorb than a big jump every three years.

Give notice, thank your regulars, and keep serving quality. Clients who value your work will stay; the handful who leave over a fair rise were rarely profitable anyway.
